Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if I need oxygen while at high altitude?
If you experience symptoms like persistent headaches, dizziness, fatigue, shortness of breath, or trouble sleeping and even flu-like symptoms, you may benefit from supplemental oxygen. A pulse oximeter can help determine if your oxygen levels are low.
Does oxygen help with adjusting to high altitudes?
Yes, it can. As you ascend to higher elevations, the air contains less oxygen, which means your body has to work harder to maintain oxygen levels in your blood. This can lead to fatigue and other symptoms. Oxygen therapy can help your body adjust more quickly by boosting your oxygen intake, allowing you to recover faster, sleep better, and avoid feeling overly exhausted. While your body will naturally acclimatize over time (usually within 14 days), using oxygen can significantly ease the process, especially in the first few days.

Is altitude sickness normal?
Around 40% of people who visit high-altitude areas in the western U.S., particularly regions like Colorado, will experience some form of altitude sickness. Travelers arriving from sea level are especially susceptible. Using supplemental oxygen during your stay can help mitigate these effects and improve your overall experience.

How should I use oxygen to help with altitude sickness?
The more frequently you use oxygen, the better the results. The most effective time to use it is while sleeping, as this helps your body recover overnight. If you're awake, try using it for 30-45 minutes a few times throughout the day while engaging in activities like reading or watching a movie. Quick bursts of oxygen (like those from store-bought cans) are typically not sufficient for significant relief. Our concentrators provide more oxygen in a shorter time, leading to better recovery.

Can I use oxygen with my CPAP machine?
Yes, it is possible to connect oxygen to your CPAP machine using a special attachment. However, we recommend consulting with your healthcare provider before combining these treatments to ensure it is appropriate for your individual health needs.

When will I be charged for the oxygen?
To confirm your reservation, we require payment at the time of booking. We'll send you a payment link by email after we've confirmed the details of your rental. If you need to cancel your trip, we offer a full refund as long as the cancellation is made before the machine is delivered.

Will my insurance cover the oxygen rental or purchase?
We do not directly bill insurance companies. We recommend contacting your insurance provider to determine whether they will reimburse for oxygen services. While many insurers do not cover short-term or travel-related oxygen needs, we provide receipts for you to submit to your insurance company for reimbursement.

What is your cancellation policy?
We understand that plans can change. You can cancel your reservation for a full refund if you notify us before the oxygen machine is delivered. Please confirm your cancellation via phone @ 970 510 6523 and we will ensure it's processed.

What are your business hours?
Our regular business hours are 9 AM to 6 PM (Mountain Time), seven days a week.

Should I reserve my oxygen machine in advance?
Yes, we recommend reserving your oxygen machine as early as possible, especially during busy seasons. Oxygen devices are in high demand, so booking early ensures availability for your trip.

When will my oxygen machine be delivered?
Delivery time and date will be scheduled at the time of your reservation, so you know exactly when to expect your oxygen concentrator.

How do I know if the oxygen is working?
You’ll likely feel an improvement in how you feel—more energy, less fatigue, and better sleep. Additionally, oxygen levels in your blood can be measured using a pulse oximeter, which can help you track your progress while using supplemental oxygen. We offer pulse oximeter rentals for a small fee.

What is a pulse oximeter?
A pulse oximeter is a small device that measures the oxygen saturation level in your blood. You simply clip it to your finger, and it will give you a percentage reading of your oxygen levels. Most people aim for a reading in the 90% range. While using supplemental oxygen, you should see an increase in your oxygen saturation levels.

What is a POC (Portable Oxygen Concentrator)?
A POC is a compact oxygen concentrator that provides portable oxygen on-the-go, either through AC power, DC power, or batteries. While these devices are designed for individuals who need constant oxygen, most travelers to high-altitude areas will benefit more from using a stationary concentrator during their stay, which is more effective for intermittent use. We offer the Inogen Rove 6 POC, which is widely considered the best unit on the market.

Can I take the POC on a plane?
Our portable oxygen concentrators (POCs) are FAA-approved for air travel. However, it's always a good idea to check with your airline in advance to ensure compliance with their specific regulations. Note: Most airlines required documentation from your doctor to operate an oxygen concentrator on an airplane. A written notice of your oxygen requirement and specific required flow rate may be required to use a POC on an airplane. It is strongly recommended that you obtain this documentation before arriving to airport security with a POC.

Do I need to return the stationary oxygen concentrator?
No, the rental delivery fee covers both delivery and pickup of the oxygen machine for local rentals. You’ll just need to make arrangements with your accommodation to ensure it is returned to us. For portable oxygen units taken outside our service area, you will be responsible for shipping them back via FedEx or UPS with tracking reported to Glenwood Oxygen at the time of shipping. Please call us at 970 510 6523 or email info@glenwoodoxygen.com to report return tracking. Additional charges may apply if the rental unit is not shipped within the timeframe designated by our rental agreement with you.

Is using oxygen safe?
Yes, breathing supplemental oxygen at a low flow rate (2 LPM) is safe for most individuals, even at high altitudes. However, if you have concerns about using oxygen, consult with your doctor before your trip to ensure it's suitable for your health.

Is oxygen addictive?
No, using oxygen in a therapeutic setting will not make you dependent on it. It’s simply a temporary aid to help you adjust to the lower oxygen levels at higher elevations.

How should I clean my oxygen machine?
We clean and sanitize every oxygen machine before delivery, so it is ready for use. Additionally, we provide you with new, sealed nasal cannulas for each guest, so there's no need for cleaning.

Can children or pets use supplemental oxygen?
Yes, children can use supplemental oxygen, but it's recommended to consult with a pediatrician before starting. For pets, consult your veterinarian.

Are there any side effects of using supplemental oxygen?
For most people, there are no side effects when using oxygen at recommended flow rates. Rarely, some people may experience mild dryness in the nose or throat, which can be alleviated by using a humidifier attachment.

Can I use oxygen if I have a medical condition, such as COPD or asthma?
If you have a pre-existing condition, we recommend consulting your doctor before your trip. Our oxygen concentrator rentals are not intended to treat any medical conditions. Supplemental oxygen is generally safe but should be used according to your doctor's guidance for your specific health needs.

What type of oxygen concentrator should I choose—stationary or portable?
Stationary concentrators are ideal for use in accommodations and provide consistent oxygen flow, making them the best option for most travelers. Portable concentrators are lightweight and battery-operated, perfect for outdoor activities or air travel.

How long does a portable oxygen concentrator battery last?
The battery life depends on the model and the flow setting. On average, most portable oxygen concentrators last 4–8 hours on a single charge. Additional batteries can be rented or purchased for extended use.

What is the difference between continuous flow and pulse flow oxygen?
Continuous flow provides a steady stream of oxygen, while pulse flow delivers oxygen in short bursts when you inhale. Stationary units typically offer continuous flow, while portable units may offer one or both options. We can help you choose the best type for your needs.

Do I need a prescription to rent oxygen equipment?
No, you do not need a prescription for short-term oxygen rental for altitude adjustment. However, if you have a medical condition requiring oxygen, consult your doctor before your trip.
What should I do if I feel worse even while using oxygen?
If your symptoms persist or worsen, discontinue use and seek medical attention. Severe altitude sickness can lead to life-threatening conditions like high-altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE) or high-altitude cerebral edema (HACE), which require immediate treatment.

Can I extend my oxygen concentrator rental if I decide to stay longer?
Yes, you can extend your rental by contacting us as soon as possible. Extensions are subject to equipment availability.

Do you offer delivery to locations outside of your immediate service area?
We primarily serve customers in our designated service area of Glenwood Springs, Carbondale, Basalt and Aspen, but we may accommodate special requests for an additional delivery fee. Please contact us to discuss your needs. Note: Severe weather conditions and snow may impact delivery availability or timing.

How should I store the oxygen concentrator when not in use?
Store the machine in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, heat sources, or flammable materials. Keep it upright and ensure it is not obstructed to allow proper ventilation.
What measures do you take to ensure equipment cleanliness?
Our equipment is thoroughly cleaned, disinfected before every rental. All tubing, nasal cannulas, and accessories are replaced with brand-new, sealed items for each customer.

Can I use supplemental oxygen while hiking or skiing?
Yes, portable oxygen concentrators can help reduce fatigue and improve endurance during physical activities at high altitudes. While our portable oxygen concentrators come with a carrying satchel, a good backpack capable of carrying the machine is recommended for hiking or skiing.
